Ubuntu 18.04 is a new version with long-term support (Long Term Support). You will have 5 years of support for both the desktop and server versions.

Canonical founder, Mark Shuttleworth, has explained the meaning behind its name, “Bionic Beaver”. The mascot is a beaver because it is energetic, hardworking and an impressive engineer, which perfectly describes a typical Ubuntu user. “Bionic” is due to the number of robots that run on Ubuntu Core.

Features of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver

  1. GNOME 3.28 Desktop

Ubuntu started using the GNOME desktop environment with Ubuntu 17.10. Ubuntu 18.04 continues to use GNOME and sets it as a default, specifically version 3.28.

  2. Kernel 4.15

This new Ubuntu version brings along Kernel 4.15. Its main features are:

    • AMD secure memory encryption support
    • Better energy management
    • CPU driver for the cgroup v2 interface
    • Better support for old and new hardware
  3. Xorg by default

Ubuntu 18.04 comes with the traditional graphics of Xorg and a new remittance based on Wayland. Xorg is the default one. The Ubuntu development team has listed different reasons for this choice, including better software performance such as Hangouts, Skype and WebRTC services at Xorg. It also recovers better from Shell issues. For the release of Ubuntu 18.10, the team will re-evaluate Wayland as the default.

  4. Ubuntu light installation

Along with the full version of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, you can perform a light installation of Ubuntu. This option removes a lot of software packages and allows you to obtain a system with a desktop environment, web browser, central system tools and little more than that. This option appears in the Ubuntu installer. Note that it is not a replacement for Ubuntu Minimal ISO.

  5. Canonical will collect some data

According to a recent announcement made on the Ubuntu mailing list, Canonical will begin to collect some user data related to the system configuration and the packages installed on the machine. With Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, the option to exclude data collection will be provided in the installer.

  6. New installer for the Ubuntu Server

With Ubuntu 18.04, Canonical updates the command line installer of the Ubuntu Server. The new installer, called “Subiquity”, will be by default in the next version of LTS by default. This change will give a new look to the server installation process, which until now had been the installer based on Debian text.

  7. Faster installation

With Facebook’s zstd compression algorithm, you can expect a faster installation speed of Ubuntu, about 10% more than version 18.04.

  8.  Net changes and improvements

    • Systemd-resolved adds up as a default DNS resolution
    • NetworkManager comes with team support with libteam
    • ifupdown has become obsolete and netplan.io has been added
    • The command networkctl is available to see the summary of the network device
