Backups now available for your cloud server

We know you have been waiting for them. And after months of hard work to give you the best, we are excited to announce that … Backups are now available at Clouding.io!

What are they for?

Now you can save a history of your server that will protect and ensure the continuity of your project. You will be more protected against intrusions, viruses or bitlockers, ransomware, software problems, accidental deletions or any other eventuality that may affect the integrity of your data.

How do I set it up?

It is very simple, you can set up the backups for your Cloud Servers hosted at Clouding.io in a few seconds. And you can do it right now from your control panel!

To set them up you will only have to choose:

  • The number of copies: the minimum is 2 and the maximum is 30.
  • The frequency: how often your Cloud Server will be backed up. The options are every day, every 2 days, 3, 4, 5, 6 or every week.
For instance, if you select 30 copies on a daily basis, a copy of your server will be made every day and you can return it to the state it had during any of the last 30 days. If you choose 4 copies with a weekly frequency, one copy will be made every 7 days and therefore there will be more changes in your server between each copy.
We recommend that you adjust these values based on how often your data server change. For instance, if you have an e-commerce with a lot of traffic, we recommend that you backup each day and save at least 7 backups. If you have a static website, it may be enough to save one copy each week.

What is the price?

We have created a very simple, clear and affordable pricing scheme. Even if your budget is tight, you can also enjoy our backup service for your Cloud Server.

The price is based on the size of the SSD disk of your cloud server: For each block of 25GB, 1 backup is 0.50 € per month. For instance, if you want to save 4 backups and the SSD disk of your cloud server is 50GB, the price is 4€.

Therefore, the formula is:

( Size of your sever´s disc / 25 ) * Number of backups to be kept * 0,50€

The frequency does not affect the price: A server with a SSD disc of 50GB for which you choose 4 backups with a weekly frequency has a price of 4€. If you choose the same number of backups but set the frequency as daily, the price will be the same: 4€.

Can I restore only one file?

Yes and no. Our platform makes a complete copy of the disk of your Cloud Server, reading it directly from our high performance Cloud Storage. In this way, we do not depend on any software installed on your Cloud Server to make the copy. This has the advantage that backups will always be done, whatever you have installed on your server or even if it is turned off. The drawback is that we cannot restore one single file, since we make backups at the level of “blocks” that does not understand what it copies.

However, in order to recover one single file, we have included a very interesting option: You can create a server from a backup! This way, if you want to extract  one single file, all you have to do is create a new server from the copy where the file you want to recover is located, connect to it to extract the file and then delete it. Since at Clouding.io you only pay for the seconds you use the server, it will only cost you a few tenths of a cent!

How does it work? It is secure?

During each backup, the platform reads the entire disk of your Cloud Server dividing it into small blocks -about 50MB each- that are compressed and stored in an independent Object Storage.

The Object Storage that stores the backups, is distributed among different servers and keeps several replicas of each block – or its object – stored in it. Therefore, even if a storage server fails, your backups are still saved, available and safe.

Both the architecture of the system that stores the SSD disk of your server -with triple replica- and the one that stores the backups are similar in “concept” and design. So both guarantee that your data will always be available, even if any elements of the platform fail. But both systems are independent of each other, to avoid a failure in one spreading to the other.

From your control panel you can manage your backups easily and safely. From here we show you how to activate and manage your backups. Also, remember that you can change the setting – or disable the backups – any time: We adapt to you 🙂
